Queen Elizabeth Health Complex

From one end of the Queen Elizabeth Health Complex to the other, seventy-five works by artists, such as Nicolas Ruel, Susan G. Scott and Marie-Danielle Leblanc, beautify the hospital.

Each of the Queen Elizabeth Health Complex’s seven floors houses an art collection offering passersby a restful, contemplative moment.

At the end of one hallway in a perfect vanishing point, you can’t miss the work of renowned Montreal photographer Nicolas Ruel. Created on a stainless steel plate, the artist’s preferred material, the piece jumps out with its light reflections and originality. Despite the steel’s apparent coldness, it exudes an inviting warmth. The abstract work awakens curiosity and elicits a plethora of sensations.

A bit further on, the work of the prolific Marie-Danielle Leblanc has a powerful energy. Her bold colour palette and the texture of the spontaneous splattering create an arresting, dynamic painting. Her encaustic technique gives it an incomparable brilliance and three-dimensional depth.

Fellow Quebecer  Susan G. Scott donated six abstract landscapes for the project. Communing with nature, she paints trees, streams and plants with deeply thoughtful expressionist brushstrokes. Her vibrant compositions transport patients beyond the walls for a moment. A professor in Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts, the artist is delighted to know that, in addition to art’s therapeutic effect, people naturally come learn about and connect with it during their stay.

The collection also includes artists Natalie Bassel, David Blatherwick, Laurent Bouchard, David Lubell, Donna Shvil and Kevin Sonmor.

Dear Earl and Gary,

On behalf of all of us at the Queen Elizabeth Health Complex, I would like to thank you and your foundation for donating and installing the beautiful artwork displayed on the first floor of the complex.

From the moment the art was installed, we received a multitude of compliments from our patients Clients are thrilled to see the transformation from a drab institution to a warm and visually stimulating environment. Who would have known how dramatic the impact would be! My only regret is that this wasn’t done sooner. It has certainly made waiting for a medical appointment so much more pleasant and calming.

Thank you again for this very generous gesture. It is truly appreciated by all of us.

Sincerely,
Irene Tschernomor, Executive Director & CEO, Queen Elizabeth Health Complex
